Hunt Test Training

This training program is for the owner who would like for their dog to compete in AKC and/or UKC Hunting Test programs, as well as a finished hunting companion. The Hunt Test program begins with Basic Obedience and progresses to a completely finished retriever anybody would be proud of! 

Hunt Tests in AKC and UKC
Junior Level

Junior level is the entry level for UKC and AKC Hunt Tests. To complete the level your dog will need to be capable of doing single retrieves through various terrain, cover and water.

Junior Level dogs will be somewhat steady at the line. They will have completed the following tasks in training.
 

  • Formal Obedience, includes whistle sit and 2 sided heeling

  • Force Fetch

  • Simple Casting

  • Collar Conditioning

  • In the field they will be doing singles off multiple gunners

  • Learning to be steady on lead

  • Introduced to retired guns

  • Deliver to hand

  • Will begin to to do simple double

Senior Level

Senior level is the middle level for UKC and AKC Hunt Tests. We generally call this the Transition Period. To complete this level your dog will need to be capable of doing doubles through various terrain, cover, and water. Your dog will also need to be steady at the line and capable of running cold blinds on land and water, while also being able to honor another dog working. Some of the tasks they will have completed are listed below.​
 

  • Pile Work

  • Double T

  • Swim By

  • Pattern Blinds

  • Blind Drills

  • Easy Cold Blinds

  • Wagon Wheel

  • In the field they will start Simple De Cheating

  • Water Doubles

  • Increased Complexity of Marks

  • No-no Drills

  • Complex Cheating Singles

*Seasoned/Senior Level takes 7 to 10 months of training*

Master Level

Master level is the highest level for UKC and AKC Hunt Tests. To complete this level your dog will need to be capable of doing triples and quads through various terrain, cover, and water. Your dog will also need to be steady at the line and capable of running longer cold blinds on land and water, while also being able to honor another dog working. They will also have to handle more technical setups along with walk ups and poison birds. Some of the tasks that they will have completed are listed below.​
 

  • ​Advanced Tune Up Drills

  • Secondary Selection

  • Poison/Diversion birds

  • Long Technical Cold Blinds on Water and Land

  • Advanced Water Marking Setups

  • Advanced Land Marking Setups
